A Welcome to Country is usually performed by a senior representative of the local Aboriginal community. Steps should be taken to ensure that an appropriate Aboriginal representative is invited to undertake the Welcome to Country and that the representative involved is involved in, and comfortable with, the arrangements.
Acknowledgement of Country
An Acknowledgement of Country is a way that all people can show respect to the traditional owners and custodians of the lands and waters. The Chair or speaker at the event should acknowledge that the meeting/event is taking place on the traditional owners land. Where the name of the traditional owners and custodians is known it is specifically used. Local Aboriginal organisations such as the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, and ANTaR NSW can provide advice on who are the traditional custodians and owners of the specific lands.
